Melvin Bert Obituary

Melvin D. “Mel” Bert, 91 of Jackson Center, passed away on October 24, 2019 at Avalon Springs in Mercer. Mel was born on May 1, 1928 in Ringertown, PA to the late Harvey and Florence (Dopler) Bert. He was a truck driver for Cooper-Jarrett and then an owner/operator for Central Transport, retiring in 1993. Mel was a musician and loved playing the organ. He enjoyed trucking, tinkering, and doing yard work. He was a great cook and passed many recipes onto his children. His favorite meal was spaghetti and meatballs and he never missed a meal. Mel was Protestant by faith. He proudly served his Country in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1949. Mel married his beloved wife, Marjorie E. (Foster) Bert in January 1956, she survives. In addition to his wife, Mel is survived by sons George Bert of Jackson Center, Robert Bert and wife Betsy of Fredonia, Michael Bert and wife Catherine of Jackson Center, and David Bert, Jackson Center, eleven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, sister Gail Lander of Newville, PA, and sister-in-law Iris of Greensburg, PA. In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his daughter Kimberlee Cooney, infant great-grandson, Nathaniel Zirkle, sister June Vyskievich, and brothers Eugene and William Bert. Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to Black Funeral Homes of STONEBORO, 99 Franklin Street, where family and friends are welcome from 1-3 pm on Sunday, October 27. A funeral service will follow at 3 pm at the funeral home. Military Honors will follow the service rendered by the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard. Interment will be private.
