Roberta McClelland Obituary

Roberta Ann (Hanford) McClelland passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2021. She was born May 21, 1941, in Grove City, PA to Wendell P. and Margaretta H. (Eisenberg) Hanford. Roberta was a 1959 graduate of Lakeview High School where she met her true love, Larry McClelland. He asked her to the senior prom and they became the “cool couple” of the senior class. Following graduation, Roberta moved to New Castle where she attended New Castle School of Business. She immediately went to work at Westinghouse in Sharon as a keypunch. Later, she worked as a wage tax collector and auditor for Sandy Lake Township. After her kids had grown, she worked for Jane’s Stromboli, in Stoneboro. In the spring of 1960, after attending Lakeview High School’s production of Oklahoma Larry proposed to her and they spent the next 43 years raising a family in the home that they designed and built together. They were married July 1, 1961, because she did not want to be a “June Bride.” Together, they had two children, David McClelland of Stoneboro, and Jennifer (Bill) Redfoot, of Sandy Lake. They had three granddaughters, Megan McClelland, and Anna and Lauryn Redfoot. Her granddaughters were the center of her world. She loved being with them on their weekly Dunkin dates, shopping, and watching them participate in their school and sports activities. She was their “Gram.” Roberta opened her home to David and Jenn’s many friends, always treating them like her own children. She even allowed Jenn and her friends to continue having sleepovers as adults. Roberta and Larry were season ticket holders to the Steelers for over 40 years. She was an avid reader and looked forward to being challenged by the New York Times crossword puzzle. They also loved traveling, especially to Connecticut and Key West. Even after Larry’s passing in January of 2005, Roberta continued traveling, including sailing around the world on the Queen Mary II. Her family will miss their daily FaceTime calls, accidental phone calls, text messages, and the calls for help with her iPhone, email, and Amazon account. In recent years, her son ate dinner with her and they enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Her daughter and her friends always joked that Roberta would be their “Sophia” when they became “The Golden Girls.” She was a lifetime member of the Stoneboro Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon and as church treasurer for many years. She developed a close relationship with Pastor Adam Rodgers, who will be officiating her funeral, per her request. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Rose and Black Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 99 Franklin Street, Stoneboro, where family and friends are welcome on Monday, May 3, 2021 from 4 pm – 7 pm, and then on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 from 10 am – 11 am.
